Abraham Pais, in his masterly Albert Einstein tome, Subtle Is The Lord, writes of Perrin's Book:
"...remains as refreshing as ever..." and " this work contains not only an account of the determination of Avogadro's Number
from Brownian Motion, but also a summary of all the methods of its determination which had been put to the test at that time."
(Read: Subtle Is The Lord, The Science And The Life Of Albert Einstein, 1982, Oxford, Page 99).
Indeed, Perrin's monograph is as refreshing as ever.
Chapter Headings:
(1) Chemistry And The Atomic Theory
(2) Molecular Agitation
(3) The Brownian Movement
(4) The Laws Of Brownian Movement
(5) Fluctuations
(6) Light And Quanta
(7) The Atom And Electricity
(8) The Genesis And Destruction Of Atoms
What else to say ? This book, along with the small reprint book:
Albert Einstein, Investigations On The Theory Of The Brownian Movement (Dover Publications) makes for excellent reading.
Not to eschew more modern offerings, one may--with profit--turn to Don Lemon's, An Introduction To Stochastic
Processes In Physics (2002, John Hopkins) and, finally Cheng's, Einstein's Physics ( 2013, Oxford).
Let us read:
(1) "...molecular agitation is made manifest by the phenomena of diffusion..." (Page 4), a pretty derivation of Van't Hoff's Law is provided in a footnote ( Page 40).
(2) " it is easy to see that the charge carried by a gram-ion must be One Faraday exactly..." Proof by contradiction ( Page 46).
(3) "...the same ardent curiosity that has led us to weigh the stars and map out their courses urges us towards the infinitely
small as strongly as towards the infinitely large..." ( Page 52).
(4) "...the equipartition of energy can be demonstrated, the demonstration is due to Boltzmann..." (Page 60).
(5) "...though at first sight discontinuity of this kind may seem strange, we are as a matter of fact prepared to support
the assumption in view of Einstein's brilliant extension of the hypothesis that enabled Planck to explain the mechanism
of isothermal radiation--as we shall see later." (Page 71).
One can hardly ignore the lovely section entitled: The Blueness Of The Sky (Beginning Page 139).
One can hardly ignore the lovely section entitled: The Number Of Atoms That Go To Make Up A Known Volume Of Helium,
"...since we can count the alpha-projectiles emitted in a second by a radioactive body, we know how many atoms there are
in the mass of Helium produced in that time..." (Page 210).
Experiment (numbers), Theory (models), and a small dose of mathematics (mostly of an elementary sort ! )
combine to provide a rich source of collateral study.
Reiterating Abraham Pais: "...as refreshing as ever..."
